BIOL 105 - Medical Microbiology


(4.0 credits)

This course examines the basic principles of microbiology and the classification of microbes, with an emphasis on their relevance to human health. Topics include: the morphology, growth, and transmission of microorganisms; microbial genetics, recombinant DNA, and biotechnological applications; the epidemiology and role of pathogens in infectious diseases; human immunology; antimicrobial strategies; and the prevention and control of infectious diseases in humans. Weekly three-hour labs familiarize students with standard techniques in microbiology.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of BIOL 111  and BIOL 112 ; OR successful completion of BIOL 111  with concurrent enrollment in BIOL 112
